How Do We Protect Our Children
The Second Amendment
by Barbara Stanley

For two days and nights I prayed and cried and prayed some more. I identified with the parents in Beslan, Russia as their little ones went through hell. I had a feeling this hostage situation would end badly, for the terrorists have shown us, so many times before, just how little they value their own lives and even less those of innocent children. For years Israelis have buried their families and friends because of the abominable suicide bombers coming from the Arab side. And now the murderers are getting closer to home.

The first day of school in many Slavic countries is second only to Christmas for the celebration of it. Parents accompany their children and flowers are brought for the teachers. Songs are sung and smiles are the order of the day… school is that important. It was like that when I was a child, too. We were respectful, well groomed and often also brought gifts for our teachers on holidays and special occasions. Our parents were involved in many aspects of all that went on in school, especially grammar school. Even though I did more than my fair share of daydreaming, school was seen as a privilege to be held in high regard.

In Beslan, the first day of September turned into a trip into hell that will fuel nightmares for many, many night to come and that is for the lucky ones, the ones who survived the terrorists.

The news was referring to the terrorists as "hostage-takers" but I prefer to call a spade a spade and these dogs from hell are terrorists, plain and simple. They have only one need from us and that is to be sent back to God for a refresher course in how to live in a peaceful society. The so-called religion of peace simply is not.

As I watched the siege unfold to it horrific conclusion, I kept wondering what we would do, here in America, should terrorists take our children hostage and occupy our schools. I have come to the conclusion that teachers and parents need to be armed and need to know how to use those arms to protect our most precious possessions: our children.

Think about it: if those teachers and parents in Russia were carrying guns (concealed would be best), those terrorists would have been brought up cold and less loss of life would have been the case. The siege would have been over sooner and more children would be sleeping in their own beds tonight instead of a slab in the morgue.

I know the libs and the Left would begrudgingly allow us to have guns just for hunting but there is no more dangerous animal than the terrorist and those are the predators I would hunt. I know how to shoot; my parents knew and my kids know, too. I have never killed an animal for food because I have no need to; I let farmers provide my meat for the most part, save for the odd bit of venison friends might give. The Founders, in their wisdom, knew we needed the Second Amendment to protect the First Amendment's freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and that is why it exists. The terrorists would take away our life, liberty and our pursuit of happiness and that is a cold, hard and indisputable fact.

We are living in a dangerous world; not unlike the early days of this country and we need to adapt to the times or we might lose tomorrow. Since when does an unconstitutional law prevent me from protecting my family? We have laws that protect us from crimes but we are not allowed, in many states, to prevent those very crimes and that is a disgrace for a nation such as ours. The average police officer can arrive, for the most part, pretty much too late to help so we, already on the scene, must take charge.

When folks began pumping their own gas, the liberal nannies warned that gas stations would go up in flames. It's been years since we began self-service at the gas pump yet I have yet to hear of the idiots who have burned themselves, their cars and the stations. The liberals were wrong about that and they are wrong about guns.

More crimes are prevented when citizens are armed in defense of themselves and their families. Some crimes are even prevented with just a woman's hand in her bag as though she had a gun. Yet we are still, for the most part, unarmed and undefended and that is the real crime.

After Beslan, as after 9/11, the world has changed and an involved adult population stands on the front lines here at home in the war on terrorists. So why aren't we armed?

There are thousands of terrorists living in our midst, in our neighborhoods and they not only know where our malls and schools are but they know their vulnerabilities. Will we allow Beslan-style terrorists to come here? Are we ready to sacrifice even more citizens, our children among them?
